In The Spotlight - Karen Vosler, Union Savings

“I have been riding a never-ending roller coaster that always has surprises through the peaks and valleys of our industry. To survive you must be open minded to continue to learn, have a watchful eye to continue to grow within, and enjoy the ride in the good times.”

I started in the mortgage business in Northern Indiana (South Bend - Notre Dame) in 1964 when it took 3 to 6 months to process and close an FHA and VA loan. That was also the time when only the banks handled conventional loans and that was with 20% down and a hand shake for an approval.

I started in the industry as a loan processor then administrative assistant, closer, mortgage trainer, branch coordinator staffing, training and getting branch approval for branches in Indiana, Michigan and Illinois.

I also headed and supervised the mortgage loan underwriting department with staff in remote locations with FHA DE Underwriting Approval for the 4 state radius.

In 1986, my former husband obtained a job in Dayton area and I decided to stay in the mortgage industry and become a loan officer. In 1987 I became very involved with the Women Council of Realtors holding various committee positions, then secretary, bylaws, ways and means, audit and budget positions. In 1996, I was awarded Affiliate of the Year for WCR.

I have also been very involved with the Dayton Area Board of Realtors in various committee positions. The most challenging was as chair and co-chair for the DABR Golf Outing for 5 years. In 2005 I was awarded the Affiliate of the Year for the Dayton Area Board of Realtors.

While employed with Ryland Mortgage was very involved with the local Homebuilders Association and the Sales and Marketing group.

Other involvement in the community in way of volunteering and/or supporting:

  • Women Caring for Other
  • Artemis
  • SICSA
  • Candlelighter part of Child Medical Center
  • American Legion Auxiliary
  • Hannah's Treasurer Chest

I have worked for several companies while in the Dayton Area including: Republic Mortgage, Barclays American Mortgage, Norwest Mortgage, Ryland Mortgage, Countrywide Home Loans, GMAC Mortgage and I am currently with Union Savings Bank in the Fairborn location.
