Denny Smart - 2006 DMBA President

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Wow! That’s about all I can say. This market makes me feel like I’m riding the “Beast” roller coaster at Kings Island or something. One moment the Feds are implying they may need to raise interest rates to curb inflation. The next month they decide that an emergency inter-meeting rate cut is needed to stop the market from a free fall. I don’t know about you, but it makes my head spin.

Although our industry has experienced its fair share of bad press lately, we still need to be optimistic and the look at the bright side of things. We could be in for an opportunity to drum up some much needed business in the not so distant future. The 10 year bond has consistently been declining, and all the talk now is of future rate cuts to prevent a recession. If you recall, I hinted towards this possibility in earlier articles, so I hope everyone is ready to take advantage of the situation.

Remember, go back to the basics. Stay in contact with your customer base. Keep them informed of what’s going on right now. Due to the current housing slump and the fact that so many people have adjustable rates getting ready to adjust or amortize, the timing could be good to generate some refinances. You never know when the proverbial pendulum can swing back the other way and change the outlook again. Get in gear and be proactive, and you still may have time to make 2007 a productive year.
