February 2009 - Volume 12, Issue 2 - Page 1

As I write this month’s message I am consumed by three very different upcoming events: First is the message that Treasury Secretary Geithner delivered earlier today outlining a revamped plan to rescue the financial markets, thaw frozen credit markets, and help troubled homeowners; Secondly there is the potential $15,000 tax credit proposed in the stimulus package passed by the Senate that would be provided to all home purchasers during the next year; Third of course is the UD v. Xavier game tomorrow night.
Geithner’s plan proposes a public-private investment fund that seeks to leverage private capital and sponge out the toxic assets on banks’ books with the hope that banks would then be able to lend money again. It would also set aside $50 billion to help stem foreclosures, keep families in their homes, and lessen the oversupply strain on the real estate market. All of this will come with greater Federal oversight and accountability.
The recently passed Senate Bill proposed doubling the existing $7,500 tax credit to $15,000. In addition there would no longer be a requirement that the credit be repaid over the next 15 years and it would apply to ALL homebuyers, not just those purchasing for the first time. What a perfect storm for those looking to buy that first home or move up into a larger home for their families – historically low mortgage interest rates, low real estate prices, and a tax credit to top it off. Let’s spread the word and help get this market moving!
Lastly it is that time of year again were I cringe at the thought of losing another game to Xavier, the streak currently stands at six in a row. For those of you who don’t know me I am a 1988 graduate of UD (as can be evidenced by my license plate) and I started attending games at the Arena in the year that it opened, I was 4. To a Flyer Fan this is the biggest game of the season – let’s hope BG and crew can pull it off!
GO FLYERS!
